Eldred Theater at Case Western Reserve University
2013-14 Season
Jerrold Scott, Artistic Director • Ron Wilson, Producing Director

Betty the Yeti
by Jon Klein
October 4-13, 2013
Directed by Jerrold Scott
A long-standing battle between consumers and defenders rages on in an old-growth Oregon forest. Add meddling by the U.S. Forest Service, and the presence of a long-forgotten native denizen, and you have the comic mix of this “eco-fable” by Jon Klein.

Black Comedy
by Sir Peter Shaffer
November 15-24, 2013
Directed by Ron Wilson
This wild British farce follows the antics of a “borrowing” gone bad. After helping himself to an absent neighbor’s treasures in order to impress his fiancée and her family, a sculptor desperately tries to return them before circumstances take a turn back to the light.

The Bald Soprano
by Eugene Ionesco
February 14-23, 2014
Directed by Christopher Bohan
Ionesco’s The Bald Soprano pits Mr. and Mrs. Smith against their mundane lives. When the Martins arrive for a visit, an epic absurdist battle ensues as the typical dinner party turns into a tirade of non-sequiturs and miscommunication.

Measure for Measure
by William Shakespeare
April 11-20, 2014
Directed by Jerrold Scott
Written in the early 1600s, with the upheaval of a new ruler on the throne, Measure is considered one of the Bard’s ‘problem plays.’ It defies simple classification, as the play explores whether ideas such as right or wrong, and good or bad, are really that easy to distinguish from one another.

Seven Lives Filtered Through the Ideas of August Strindberg
February 27 – March 9, The Helen

Written and assembled by Anders Cato and The Graduate Ensemble of 2014
Texts by August Strindberg
Translated by Anders Cato
Directed by Anders Cato

Who am I?” The question every person examines at least once in their lives. Director Anders Cato (Red, Crime and Punishment) returns to Cleveland Play House to work for the first time with the CWRU/CPH MFA Acting Program Graduate Ensemble as they explore this universal uncertainty. Using the works of daring playwright August Strindberg as inspiration, these seven young actors examine their own contemporary life experiences in this original piece and break open our preconceived notions of who we are.

The Misanthrope
October 24 – November 3, The Helen, Cleveland Play House

Written by Molière
Translated by Richard Wilbur
Directed by Donald Carrier

Is honesty always the best policy? Alceste, a French aristocrat, is committed to telling the absolute truth regardless of the repercussions. Unfortunately, because he’s in love with the flighty young widow Célimène, who epitomizes society’s excesses, a comedic collision course of values is inevitable. Written nearly 400 years ago, Moliere’s witty classic demonstrates once again that the more things change, plus c’est la même chose!
