NOTES ON ROLES/CASTING:
Mercury:
Actors playing NICK and BRIAN must be willing to engage in same-sex male intimacy in the form of cuddling and kisses on the neck and mouth.
The characters of BRIAN and SAM are depicted in layers of undress: Brian in boxers and a t-shirt, Sam shirtless underneath an apron.
Pippin:
The roles of PIPPIN and CATHERINE will require moments of intimacy with each other including multiple kisses and “bedroom choreography”, some sincere and some in the spirit of comedy.
The role of PIPPIN will require additional moments of intimacy of varying levels with both male and female ENSEMBLE members, mostly through dance.
ENSEMBLE members will require moments of intimacy of varying levels with each other and the role of PIPPIN, mostly through dance.
PIPPIN, CATHERINE, FASTRADA, and ENSEMBLE members may be asked to wear revealing and/or form fitting costumes for specific moments. This will not include nudity, but perhaps undergarments.
Notes on Type:
- We encourage students of all racial, gender and sexual identifications to audition for our productions. If you are concerned that your identification would make you ineligible for a given production, please contact Artistic Director, David Vegh, at dmv36@case.edu for clarification.
Perusal scripts will be available at the box office beginning October 17th.
Character and Role Breakdowns
Mercury:
Pamela: a married woman, definitely type A, used to getting her way in most things, and probably pretty lonely.
Heather: a married woman, charismatic and poised, used to relying on a friendly smile to smooth things over.
Alicia: a woman, chatty with a “new age” vibe, she vacillates between flighty and ominous, steeped in the occult.
Olive: a woman, a downstairs neighbor, someone who thinks of herself as good and correct, myopic, also a busybody.
Nick: a man, a solid communicator, he’s doing an okay job of holding it together in hard times; the strong one.
Brian: a man, handsome and flippant, definitely an urbanite, still learning how to really commit during hard times.
“Sam”: Alicia’s boyfriend. He’s not an angry guy, just very matter of fact, easily frustrated, and usually bloody. He’s also the physical manifestation of vengeance.
Pippin:
Leading Player: Male or Female Presenting; The ultimate ‘ring leader’ and the narrator of our story, charming and manipulative with maturity and sophistication. Strong singer/dancer. Tenor or Mezzo.
Pippin: Male Presenting; Our story’s young and confused protagonist. He is longing to find his purpose in life. Naive, innocent, and discontent. Strong singer. Tenor.
Charles: Male Presenting; Pippin’s demanding father, possesses great wisdom, but lacks understanding. Comic timing a plus. Baritone with strong sense of rhythm.
Lewis: Male Presenting; Pippin’s dim-witted and self-absorbed step-brother. Comic timing a plus. Minimal solo singing required.
Fastrada: Female Presenting; Pippin’s seductive and conniving stepmother. Strong dancer with comic timing a plus. Alto/Mezzo.
Berthe: Female Presenting; Pippin’s free-wheeling and saucy grandmother. Comic timing a plus. Alto/Mezzo.
Catherine: Female Presenting; A single mother and hopeless romantic who becomes Pippin’s love interest. Strong singer. Mezzo/Soprano with belt.
Theo: Male presenting (age 7-13 years old); This role will be cast outside of the Case Student Population.
Ensemble: All genders; Seeking 6-8 “players” who are integral to the storytelling and will take on various roles who sing and dance.
